Teacher: Amy Liu (IG: @beezygardener)

Location: Amsterdam Noord

Healthy soil is the foundation of every thriving garden. If you’ve tried growing herbs or vegetables before without success, the missing piece is often below the surface. Strong plants, fewer pests, and better harvests all begin with living, nourished soil.

Part of the Beginner’s Gardening Series, this workshop focuses on understanding and improving soil health in small urban spaces. Amy shares how improving soil was key to transforming her tile-covered yard into a productive edible garden — and how you can create a system that improves year after year.

This session is about long-term sustainability and working with natural cycles. It is designed for beginners, and also for those with some gardening experience who want to deepen their understanding of soil health and composting.

In this workshop, you’ll cover:

  • Why soil health matters more than fertilizers

  • Understanding soil structure and soil life

  • Improving compacted or poor urban soil

  • Composting basics (what to add and avoid)

  • Compost systems for small gardens or balconies

  • Mulching and feeding your soil naturally

What’s included:

  • 2–2.5 hours of guided instruction in a small group

  • Hands-on exercises in the garden when weather allows

  • Seeds, seedlings, or plant materials to take home when available

Multiple dates available as follows.
